The Canberra Racing Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Stefano Cherchi and wishes to express its deepest and most sincere condolences to Stefano’s family and friends.
The Club would like to thank the medical team and in particular the paramedic first responders for their tireless efforts and care for Stefano following a race fall on Wednesday, 20 March 2024.
Stefano's family was advised of the accident and travelled from Italy to be by his side. The Club, Racing NSW and NSW Jockeys Association will continue to provide any support they need as they mourn his passing.
Stefano was one of three Jockeys dislodged from their mounts in the accident, with the other two affected Jockeys walking away without sustaining serious injury. All three horses involved were cleared of any serious injuries.
As a 16 year old without knowing a word of English, Stefano travelled to Newmarket in England where he would ultimately became an apprentice to Marco Botti. During a 6 year stint in Newmarket he rode over 100 winners.
A much-loved member of the international racing fraternity, Stefano had relocated to Australia 4 months ago to link up with the Annabel Neasham stable at Warwick Farm. Stefano rode in 25 races in Australia riding 2 winners. His last winner was on Flying Bat at Gosford on 16th March 2024.
Canberra Racing Club Chief Executive Darren Pearce said, "Our hearts are broken for Stefano and the ones that loved him most. He was a highly respected young man with immense talent."
"The well wishes and commentary from both sides of the globe speak volumes of his character and popularity within our industry."
"We will be offering support to riders, staff, family and friends in the wake of what is a deeply tragic accident and encourage anyone in need to reach out to us."
The Club will liaise with Stefano's family before confirming any activities to appropriately honour his memory. "Racing is a sport of soaring highs and sadly at times, devastating lows." Pearce said.
"We are feeling the pain of Stefano's loss to our very core and are grateful that our industry rallies in dark times to support those who need it, and we are now focused on those support efforts."
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, 8 April 2024 at All Saints Catholic Church, 48 George St, Liverpool, NSW at 10.30am.
