Sandown 3.22 - Beshtani

There's plenty of decent action at Sandown and Yarmouth this afternoon, with listed contests on both tracks. The former plays host to the Pequod 20 Years Of Seaworthiness Fortune Stakes at 3.22, a race that has produced some top-level performers in the past with the likes of King Of Change, Mostahdaf and Bayside Boy all successful in recent years.

It's unlikely there's a performer like that amongst the eight going to post this afternoon, but it remains an interesting race, nevertheless.

Leading Qatari trainer Hamad Al Jehani has made an excellent start to life in the UK, and he clearly has his yard in good form, with his only two runners across the last fortnight finding the scoresheet. He saddles the 107-rated Beshtani, who has done well since finishing runner-up on his UK debut in handicap company at Epsom back in June.

His latest fifth-place finish in the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot in July looks solid form, with the winner, who was only a length and three quarters in front of him, going on to run well in the Group 1 Prix du Haras Jacques le Marois.

This represents a fair drop in grade and with the application of first-time cheekpieces an interesting angle that could bring about further improvement, he gets the vote to come out on top for Wathnan Racing and retained rider James Doyle.

Odds – 4/1

Beverley 3.15 - Surprised

The Ed Bethell team are operating at a healthy 25% strike-rate (6-24 over the last 14 days) and they look to have a particularly interesting daughter of Ulysses at Beverley.

Surprised would have gone into plenty of notebooks following her eye-catching debut effort overtoday's course and distance 24 days ago and it wouldn't be a major shock to see her take a sizeable step forward this afternoon.

She looked all at sea from an early stage, ducking left coming out of the stalls, before failing to pick up the bridle throughout the first furlong. Ed Bethell's charge was clearly learning on the job and finished off her race strongly to be only beaten a length and three quarters crossing the line.

The booking of stable jockey Callum Rodriguez inspires confidence, and she can find the necessary improvement to get off the mark second time out.

Odds – 5/2
