Jockey Phil Dennis announced Monday evening that he will retire from race riding at Beverley on Tuesday.

Dennis, who has attributed his retirement to 'the constant battle' he faces with his weight, will ride Variety Island in the 4pm before having his final ride in the saddle on board Park Street in the concluding handicap at 5pm.

In a statement posted on X on Monday evening, Dennis said: "This is the hardest thing I've had to do. I've been doing what I grew up dreaming about, but the constant battle with my weight has become unsustainable and I feel this decision, although hard, is best for myself physically and mentally.

"I can't thank the trainers and owners who've supported me enough throughout my whole time in the saddle and the lads in the weighing room that I've sat next to day in and day out."

Dennis, who partnered Ornate to land the Epsom Dash on Derby day in 2019, added: "To ride nearly 300 winners is more than I ever expected as a 17-year-old starting off, but as one door closes another one opens, so it will be time to start a new chapter.

"I won't be away from a racecourse for long, but I'll miss my time riding greatly and look back on it with great memories."

Dennis was a popular member of the weighing room with fellow jockeys taking to X to wish him farewell.

Callum Shepherd said: "You can be proud of what, and how you've done in your career. Best wishes for the future Phil. It's been a pleasure sharing the weighing room with you."

Phillip Makin added: "Well done Phil and best of luck with whatever is next!", while Rossa Ryan echoed sentiments by saying "All the best in the future Phil."

Phil Dennis rode 270 winners in Britain and has partnered 12 winners this season.
