Istabraq, a three-time winner of the Champion Hurdle, has passed away at the age of 32.
A talented horse on the flat for John Gosden, Istabraq went on to become a hugely-popular figure in National Hunt Racing when trained by Aidan O'Brien, recording a staggering 23 victories from 29 starts over obstacles in the famous green and gold hoops of powerhouse owner JP McManus.
The son of Sadler's Wells famously became the fifth horse to win three Champion Hurdles when running out a decisive winner of the opening day feature for jockey Charlie Swann back in 2000.
Istabraq also recorded an astonishing four Irish Champion Hurdles, was a dual winner of the Hatton's Grace and landed the Aintree Hurdle in 1999.
JP McManus' superstar retired from racing after being pulled-up when bidding for a fourth Champion Hurdle victory in 2002 and has enjoyed a happy retirement at McManus' Martinstown Stud in County Limerick.
A brief statement issued by McManus on Thursday morning read: "Sadly, Istabraq passed away at 1.15am this morning at the ripe old age of 32. He was a very special horse who gave us many great days of fun and enjoyment.
"Our thanks to Lara Hegarty, Johnny O'Brien and all the staff at Martinstown who took such fantastic care of him over many years.
"We are pleased that we gave him a good celebration for his most recent birthday in May. He leaves Noreen, myself and the family with wonderful memories."
Istabraq reached a peak rating of 176 over hurdles and amassed £1,053,385 in prize money across his glittering nine-year career.
