Oaks dream becomes a reality

Dreamcrafter has come a long way in a short time with her first preparation to be capped by an appearance at the highest level.

The Matamata three-year-old will end her first campaign in this Saturday’s Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham.

The well-related Dreamcrafter was out of the money on debut in the spring, the only time she has failed to return a cheque, and her next five appearances were rewarded with two wins and three placings.

Trained by Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard, the daughter of Mastercraftsman then confirmed her spot in the Oaks with a last-start second behind Eleonora in the Gr.2 Sunline Vase.

“She’s a very brave and honest filly, who has done extremely well this preparation,” Ballymore Stables’ racing manager Nick Fairweather said.

“She was really good last time out to finish runner-up behind the best filly in the country. She’s come through the race extremely well.

“She has improved with each run and she’ll have a go at the Oaks and then go for a deserved break.”

Dreamcrafter is from the family of the Gr.1 VRC Derby winner Amalfi and the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup placegetter Vigor and her connections are confident she will cope with the classic distance of 2400 metres at Trentham.

“She can get a little bit keen, but the Oaks is usually a genuinely run race and that’s what she needs,” Fairweather said.
