Tainui a highly-rated 3YO

Successful Trentham debutant Tainui has been tipped to go all of the way by his co-trainer David Haworth.

“I’ve trained a lot of horses over a long period of time for Christopher and Susannah (Grace) and I think this one could be the best,” Haworth said.

“He’s showed us a lot from day one and he’s a big horse who has needed time to grow into himself. He’s a smart horse and once he gets over a bit more ground he’ll be a lot better.”

A son of Towkay, he is closely-related to the Singapore Group winner Ace Aliado and the family of Tullaroan, who Haworth and training partner Matt Dixon prepared to win a Gr.3 Manawatu Cup in the Grace colours.

Tainui landed the opening event at Trentham on Monday after racing on the pace and he drew out in the closing stages to open the first leg of a memorable double for connections. Later in the programme his sister Waikaha also came out and won on debut.

“She hasn’t got the brilliance of the other horse, but she does try very hard,” Haworth said.
