Royal Ascot Pedigrees - Day 2

Past and present shuttle sires came to the fore on the second say of Royal Ascot.

Current shuttlers Iffraaj and Teofilo and the former visitor Shamardal were represented by Group winners while Choisir did his bit with two wins as a broodmare sire including the G1 winner My Dream Boat.

The late Scat Daddy added his second two-year-old at the Royal meeting while Lord Shankhill, a former Irish National Stud sire now standing in the US, took centre stage with his son My Dream Boat wining the G1 winner Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

JERSEY STAKES: NZ-based Iffraaj got the ball rolling for the shuttle sires when his three-year-old Ribchester produced an impressive display to land the Group 3 for trainer Richard Fahey.

Iffraaj, a son of Zafonic, stands at Dalham Hall Stud and shuttle to Haunui Farm in New Zealand where he is currently leading the 2YO Sires premiership.

He will have his Nell Gwynn Stakes winner and French 1000 Guineas runner-up Nathra contesting the G1 Coronation Stakes on Friday’s Royal Ascot program. Rizeena, by Iffraaj, won the Coronation Stakes in 2014.

His NZ crops include triple G1 winner Turn Me Loose, Karaka Million winner Xiong Feng as well as G2 winner Serena Miss among his seven stakes winners in the Southern Hemisphere this season.

Other notable performers by the 15-year-old stallion include G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Wootton Bassett, himself now a sire of a G1 winner and G2 Temple Stakes scorer Hot Streak.

Ribchester is the first foal out of the Marju mare Mujarah, a half-sister to G3 winner Tactic, Listed winner Yaazy and the Listed-placed Zahoo.

Ribchester was sold for €105,000 by Highfield Farm at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in 2014 and was bought privately by his current owner Godolphin last year.

QUEEN MARY STAKES: A day after supplying his third two-year-old winner at the Royal meeting, the late Scat Daddy was responsible for another winner trained in America by Wesley Ward when Lady Aurelia blitzed her rivals in the G2 contest by seven lengths.

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, she is the sixth foal out of the G2-winning Forest Wildcat mare D'Wildcat Speed and is a half-sister to the winners Titletown Five and Distorsionada.

Lady Aurelia was bought by her part-owners George Bolton and Peter Leidel for $350,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2015.

Stonestreet Stables had picked up her dam D'Wildcat Speed for $1 million at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in 2005.

A son of Johannesburg, Scat Daddy stood at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky until he premature passing, His leading performers include Acapulco, No Nay Never and Daddy Long Legs.

DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES: Former shuttler Shamardal’s daughter Usherette followed up her victory in the Dalhia Stakes at Newmarket in May with a decisive win in this G2 event for leading French trainer Andre Fabre.

Shamardal, a 14-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway now resident at Darley’s Kildangan Stud, tasted Royal Ascot success himself when he landed the G1 St James's Palace Stakes when the meeting was held at York in 2005.

His progeny include G1 classic winner and sire Lope De Vega, Prix Ganay winner Dariyan and triple Group winner Mukhadram.

A Darley homebred, Usherette is the first foal out of the Listed-placed Maria's Mon mare Monday Show who is from the family of the high-class pair Vespone and Purple Moon.

PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES: My Dream Boat became a first G1 by Lord Shanakill and promoted Choisir as a broodmare sire with his upset win over a small but quality field of G1 performers in the day 2 highlight.

Lord Shanakill, a 10-year-old son of Speightstown, stood at the Irish National Stud for five seasons before transferring to Pin Oak Lane Farm in Pennsylvania for the 2016 breeding season.

His other leading progeny include three-time winner Mister Brightside and G3 placed Great Dancer.

Bred by Patrick Monahan, My Dream Boat is the second foal out of the winning Choisir mare Betty Burke and is a half-brother to Italian winner Compound.

Further back in his family is Nassau Stakes winner Optimistic Lass, who is the dam of Coronation Stakes heroine Golden Opinion.

My Dream Boat was bought by Tom Malone and Donald McCain for £40,000 at the Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale in 2014 having already appeared in the sales ring on two previous occasions.

ROYAL HUNT CUP: The Mick Halford-trained Portage backed up a Listed success at the Curragh with another convincing victory in this 28-runner spectacle to give Godolphina third winer on the day and a first Royal Ascot winner for his sire Teofilo.

Barbara Prendergast bred the four-year-old, who was purchased by Godolphin’s John Ferguson for 70,000 guineas from the 2012 Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Teofilo is currently standing his ninth season at Darley's Irish base at Kildangan Stud, from where he has sired 28 Group/Graded winners. He will return to Australia for a renewal of shuttle duties this spring, having missed the last two seasons after five years of shuttle duties from 2009 to 2013.

Portage is the third foal produced by the placed Zamindar mare Galley, and is a half-brother to Italian Listed winner Cape Magic.

Galley is closely related to the Listed winner Mooring, and is a half-sister to G3 July Stakes winner Wharf and Docklands, the dam of Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rail Link.

SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP: Choisir enjoyed his second success as a broodmare sire on day 2 when Persuasive maintained her unbeaten record in this Listed event for trainer John Gosden.

Persuasive, by Dark Angel, is the second foal out of the Listed-winning Choisir mare Choose Me and is a half-sister to the dual winner Amazour.

Her owners Cheveley Park Stud snapped her up for €180,000 at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in 2014.

Dark Angel stands at Yeomanstown Stud and is best known as the sire of leading performers Mecca's Angel, Lethal Force, Gutaifan and Estidhkaar.
