La Barrosa lands Somerville Tattersall Stakes
The Charlie Appleby-trained La Barrosa (2 c ex Bikini Babe by Montjeu) lived up to his top-billing as he came away with a hard fought victory in the Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket on Thursday and so doing became former shuttler’s Lope De Vega’s (Shamardal) 75th stakes winner.
The two-year-old colt came into the Group 3 winner having made an impressive winning debut over seven furlongs at Ascot on September 4 and he had to dig deep to beat Dark Lion (Dark Angel) by a length, while Qaader (Night Of Thunder) finished strongly to finished another three-quarters of a length away in third.
Purchased by owners Godolphin for 750,000gns during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, the colt is one of two winners - first stakes winner - out of winning and stakes-placed Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Bikini Babe.
Bikini Babe herself is a half-sister to Zeiting (Zieten), making her a half-sister to German Group 2 winner Combat Zone (Refuse To Bend) and Group 3-winning pair Royal Empire (Teofilo) and Scottish (Teofilo).
Further back this is the same family 2017 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Precieuse (Tamayuz).
The Ballylinch Stud-based Lope De Vega shuttled to Patinack Farm for four seasons between 2011 and 2014 and his stakes winners are headed by 11 Group 1 winners including Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo, multiple Group 1 winning sprinter Santa Ana Lane, Vega Magic and Gytrash, who will represent Inglis in The Everest (1200m) on October 17.
