Having finished an agonising second in his two previous starts, the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Pernell (3 c I Am Invincible - Courtesan by Mastercraftsman) broke his maiden at the fifth time of asking in the IGT Australia Maiden Plate (1400m) at the Gold Coast at on Wednesday.

The three-year-old colt beat Soul Dancer (Sizzling) by a neck, while Beckford (Not A Single Doubt) was another quarter of a length back in third.

Purchased by his co-owners Aquis Farm and his trainers for $525,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Yarraman Park draft, the three-year-old colt is the first winner out of the placed Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) mare Courtesan.

Courtesan herself is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Monaco Consul (High Chaparral) and a further six winners.

Meanwhile, the colt's third dam is Listed-placed Ultraviolet (In The Purple), who in turn produced dual Group 1 winner Military Plume (Sir Tristram) and Listed-placed Con Air (Star Way).

In 2018 Courtesan produced a filly by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice) - now named Dauntless - who was purchased by Damon Gabbedy's Belmont Bloodstock for $260,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, while in 2019 she produced a colt by Coolmore Stud-based sire Pierro (Lonhro) and she foaled colt Not A Single Doubt this season.

I Am Invincible - who is standing at Yarraman Park Stud for a fee of $209,000 (inc GST) and he is currently sitting second behind Written Tycoon (Iglesia) on Australia's leading sires table by earnings, while he is leading the way in terms of winners.
