Mats Hummels redeemed his first-half penalty error with a stoppage-time equaliser as Tottenham and Roma played out a dramatic 2-2 Europa League draw.
Fraser Forster kept his spot in the Europa League starting XI and will be Ange Postecoglou's first-choice goalkeeper moving forward after an ankle injury ruled out Guglielmo Vicario for several months.
Postecoglou put out a strong starting XI after Saturday's shock 4-0 win away to Premier League champions Manchester City.
Tottenham won a penalty inside five minutes when Mats Hummels fouled Pape Matar Sarr.
It took VAR to intervene to award what was a clear foul in the box and captain Heung-min Son stepped up to score.
Italian giants Roma were level 14 minutes later when Evan Ndicka scored a looping header from Paulo Dybala's free-kick.
Moments later the visitors thought they had gone ahead courtesy of a wonderful Stephan El Shaarawy volley but it was ruled out for an offside against the winger.
Sarr tried to get Spurs back in front after a good spell from the visitors with a low effort in the 29th minute but it was well saved by Mile Svilar.
In a high octane opening 45 minutes, Spurs took the lead again, this time through Brennan Johnson.
Dejan Kulusevski picked out Johnson with a superb low cross, continuing from where he left off against City on Saturday.
Roma had the ball in the net for the third time and for the second time, it was ruled off for offside. This time, Artem Dovbyk was the unfortunate one.
Hummels avenged his earlier mistake with an equaliser in stoppage time for Roma, smashing the ball into the back of the net from yards out to rescue a draw.
Tottenham midfielder Dejan Kulusevski earned glowing reviews from Joe Cole and Peter Crouch after his standout performance against Roma.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Cole described Kulusevski as "a magician," emphasising his importance to Spurs' attacking play. "He's such a good player. Tottenham are going to score so many goals with those two (Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson) combining this season," said the former Chelsea star.
Cole also highlighted the tactical challenges for manager Ange Postecoglou, noting the overlap between Kulusevski and James Maddison in midfield roles. "The reason he's getting the nod over Maddison is his off-the-ball work. He's very good at setting the press, but I think both can fit into the system," Cole explained. "Players who are technicians, who can handle the ball, thrive in Ange's style. They make the game so exciting."
Crouch echoed Cole's admiration, pointing out Kulusevski's intelligence and adaptability. "He's operating from a deeper position, which might frustrate Maddison because you probably can't play both of them there," said the former England striker. "But Kulusevski's free role allows him to run, create, and exploit tight spaces.
"He's not the quickest, but his movement, work rate, and creativity are exceptional. Watching him play with such confidence is a joy."
The duo's praise reflects Kulusevski's growing influence under Postecoglou, as Spurs look to maximise their attacking potential in both domestic and European competitions.
