Nicky Henderson has reported 2023 Champion Hurdle hero Constitution Hill to be lame, making a run in next Saturday’s Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle ‘unlikely’.
The seven-year-old took part in a public gallop on Tuesday morning at Newbury, but there was speculation regarding his health after being pulled up quickly following the exercise.
In a video statement made to the Seven Barrows X account, the Lambourn handler said: "I am afraid I have to report that we have a problem with Constitution Hill. He is currently lame.
"This wasn't immediately apparent after his gallop at Newbury on Tuesday, but for the last 48 hours he has been sore - for what reason we are still unaware.
"I am currently investigating this. I am sure everyone will appreciate what a tragic problem this is for us, but we have to report where we are.
"We are trying to find the reason, but it is not apparent. At this stage, he is unlikely to make next Saturday at Newcastle. I have to confirm to everybody that this is not a retirement call. He was bright and breezy after his gallop, but we have this issue."
Stablemate Sir Gino has replaced Constitution Hill at the head of the market for the Fighting Fifth with multiple firms and the former Champion Hurdle hero has been pushed out to 4/1 in places for a repeat victory at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
